We are all aware of the fact that alcohol is not good on keto. Is it completely true? Is there any alcohol that you can drink and still stay in ketosis? Let’s find out!
Alcohol does not have carbohydrates, but it carries a whopping 7 calories per gram. Alcohol slows weight loss by stopping the body’s ability to utilize fat stores for energy. When alcohol is consumed during ketosis, your body will convert to using acetate as an energy source rather than fat.
So, what drinks are okay on keto? Clear liquors at about 40% alcohol are safe and are considered keto alcohol. Anything that tastes sweet is not good. Here is a list of few keto-friendly alcoholic drinks.
- Hard liquors like vodka, rum, tequila, gin, brandy, and whiskey are okay to drink on a keto diet. Most of them have 0 carbs.
- Stick to dry or semi-dry wines. They usually contain less than 0.5 grams of sugar per glass. All dry wines fit well within a keto diet.
- Most light beers are fine. But look up the carb count before drinking.
Avoid wine coolers and Alcopops at all costs. They are essentially the same as sugary sodas with some alcohol added. Sweet wines and sangrias should also be avoided on a keto diet.
