If you are just starting a keto diet, then your body is supposed to go through some difficulties. However, there is no reason to worry as it is usual to have side effects when you start a new diet plan. Your body has to switch its fuel source from glucose to fat in this particular case.
The process of switching fuel source can cause some of the following side effects:
- Keto flu
- Loss of salts
- Leg cramps
- Bad breath
- Change of bowel habits
- Loss of energy
The leg cramps and loss of energy are due to sudden change into fat fuels causing the variation in blood sugar levels. Change of bowel habits is because of the body gut bacteria which will need some time to adjust to new food habits. Meanwhile, Keto flu and bad breath are caused due to the burning of fat.
All these side effects are temporary and mostly disappear with a few weeks. If you facing these side effects it means your ketogenic diet is working. If you can’t handle some of these side effects, do consult your doctor/dietitian for some remedies without breaking the ketogenic diet.
